For Prospective Students:
We offer graduate seminars to develop skills for doing original research in the areas of Chinese Buddhist tesxts, philosophical Daoism, and Japanese religion and thought. In addition, our students regularly enroll in courses outside the department, including in Art History (China), History (China and Japan), East Asian Studies, and Comparative Literature (China and Japan). Students may pursue graduate certificates and incorpoorate outside perspectives to complete interdisciplinary research. Our faculty have generally supervised doctoral research in topics from early Chinease thought; Buddhism in premodern China; and religions of early modern Japan. Students with interests in these or other closely related topics, or interdisciplinary research, are strongly encouraged to contact the faculty to inquire about a possible fit with Religious Studies at Brown.
